More About Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a key component in Traditional Chinese Medicine and one of the most commonly used medical procedures in the world. At OMBE, your acupuncturist will spend more than an hour reviewing your health concerns and medical history to develop a comprehensive treatment plan. Acupuncture treatments are designed to address the underlying physiological cause of each condition and are customized according to each client's unique health history. Adjunctive acupuncture therapies include electroacupuncture, acupressure, herbal medicine, cupping, gua sha, and tui na.
Recent research has shown acupuncture to be effective in the treatment of anxiety, carpal tunnel syndrome, degenerative disc disease, fibromyalgia, migraines, rotator cuff injuries, and smoking cessation. Research in the last five years has shown acupuncture to be effective for the treatment of several orthopedic conditions including low back pain and knee osteoarthritis. Acupuncture is also an important treatment modality for several women's health conditions and has been shown in a recent study to improve the rates of in vitro fertilization (IVF). Researchers have suggested that acupuncture may regulate the nervous system, aid the activity of endorphins and immune system cells or alter brain chemistry by changing the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones.

Acupuncture and IVF
The combination of acupuncture with IVF, IUI, ICSI or other assisted reproductive technologies, is an example of how Western and Eastern medicine can be combined to improve fertility rates. Studies have found that the combination of acupuncture and IVF resulted in higher clinical pregnancy rate. More importantly, several studies have shown that ongoing acupuncture treatments prior to assisted reproductive technologies and during pregnancy can lead to higher live birth rates.
Following an appropriate course of acupuncture, patients have reported an increase in the number of follicles and embryos, thickening of the uterine lining, improved ovarian function as well as improved sperm count, motility and morphology. Additionally, patients report fewer side effects from medications, reduced anxiety, and improved recovery from various medical procedures.
Acupuncture During Pregnancy
Acupuncture is an effective and safe treatment option throughout pregnancy. Benefits during pregnancy include assistance with morning sickness, headaches, anxiety, insomnia, heartburn and other digestive disorders as well as common prenatal orthopedic concerns including carpal tunnel and low back pain. Additionally, research has shown acupuncture to be effective for breach presentation as well as labor induction when appropriate. A more recent study has shown that acupuncture leading up to labor and delivery can decrease the length of first and second stages of labor for moms. Moms receiving acupuncture prior to delivery also report improved postpartum recovery. Breastfeeding complications are often complex requiring extra support for moms in the form of a lactation consultant or other qualified professional, however, acupuncture can improve milk supply as well as address common lactation issues.
